Born in St. Catharines, Ontario, John graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering (1965) from the Royal Military College of Canada. He served in the Canadian Armed Forces until 1968 when he resigned his Commission at the rank of Captain. Subsequently, John obtained his MBA (1970) and PhD (1974) in business administration (finance) from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.

Between 1973 and 1997, John was a Professor of Finance at several Canadian universities (Concordia University, Brock University and University of Windsor) where he taught corporate finance and stock market investing. He continues as a Professor Emeritus at the University of Windsor.

John's academic and practitioner-oriented research involving retail investors has been published in leading academic and applied journals including the Journal of Finance and the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis.

John has represented retail investors on the Toronto Stock Exchange's Investors and Issuer's Advisory Committee and has made several invited submissions to a variety of task forces sponsored by regulators of Canadian securities markets.

Currently, John serves the ShareOwner organization in a number of capacities including Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He is also a Director and the Treasurer of the World Federation of Investors Corporation. In addition, John serves on the Investment Advisory Committee for the Royal Military College of Canada Club Foundation.
