Stock Market Literacy Challenges
Since 1987, ShareOwner has helped over 80,000 Canadians learn how to buy and sell stocks more successfully.

To mark its 20th anniversary in 2007, ShareOwner developed a unique Stock Market Literacy Challenge to encourage greater financial literacy about the rewards and risks of investing directly in stocks. In 2008, a second national challenge was sponsored for Canada's university and college students.

Both literacy events gave participants free access to a selection of ShareOwner's fundamentals-based education and the opportunity to give stock market investing a try-out with an affordable amount of their money.

Real-life Investing

Graduate student looking ahead to life-long stock market literacy.ShareOwner's Challenges are unique in several ways. In particular, there's no 'pretend' or 'phantom' money in a Challenge. Contestants back their investment picks with their own money and reap the rewards of their skill.

Operating individually, or in small groups, students invest $1,000 of their own money in a portfolio of stocks and exchange-traded funds. Students divide their money as they choose - buying $25 of one stock, $50 of another, and so on.

Whole and fractional shares are credited to the student's account which is administered by our trading affiliate, Canadian ShareOwner Investments Inc. - a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund.

Having their own money on the line gives students the unique motivation to learn seriously about successful stock selection and diversification. As well, students have the unique opportunity to experience their emotional responses to modest, real-life gains and losses.

Increased Financial Literacy

In sum, ShareOwner's Challenges give investors (current and would-be) an introduction to stock market investing education and an affordable hands-on investing experience.
