Canadian ShareOwners Association
Since 1987, ShareOwner has been teaching Canadians how to select and manage portfolios of high-quality growth stocks that can earn superior rates of return.
To mark its 20th anniversary in 2007, ShareOwner created a unique stock market competition to encourage greater financial literacy about the rewards and risks of investing directly in growth stocks.
Building on the 2007 competition’s success, ShareOwner now sponsors, annually, a Growth-Stock Challenge exclusively for University and College Students.
Highlights of the 2008 competition are provided below. |

Real-life Investing
A ShareOwner competition is unique in many ways. In particular, there’s no ‘pretend’ or ‘phantom’ money in a competition. Contestants back their investment picks with their own money and reap the rewards of their skill.
Operating individually, or in small groups, contestants invest $1,000 of their own money in a portfolio of growth stocks. Contestants divide their money as they choose – buying $25 of one stock, $50 of another, and so on.
Whole and fractional shares are credited to the contestant’s account which is administered by our trading affiliate, Canadian ShareOwner Investments Inc. – a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund.
Having their own money on the line gives contestants the unique motivation to learn seriously about successful stock selection and diversification. As well, contestants have the unique opportunity to experience their emotional responses to modest, real-life gains and losses.
A Free Investing Experience
The 11-month contest is free to enter. During that period, contestants can buy and sell stocks, without charge. As well, there is no charge to cash out of a contest.
Good Grades Rewarded Twice
Contestants can win twice. First, a contestant keeps the full value of his or her portfolio, including its profit; and, second, there are 21 handsome prizes.
The overall winner takes home the top prize of $10,000 (a 1,000% return on the initial investment). Twenty other contestants receive prizes ranging from $5,000 (a 500% return) to $100 (a 10% return).
Study and Research Materials
Contestants receive free access to ShareOwner’s educational materials, monthly webinars, analytical software and the financial database of tournament securities. |

Increased Financial Literacy
In sum, ShareOwner's unique investing competition gives contestants – from all educational backgrounds – an easy opportunity to experience the intellectual and emotional challenges and rewards associated with investing directly in stocks.
Such a practical experience early in life can be expected to expand a contestant’s capacity to invest a lifetime of employment and other income, more successfully.
